On Monday instead of helping my family set up for our Christmas Eve dinner I “stole” my sister’s car and went and grabbed my friend and took CA-39 up to Mt. Baldy for lunch and just had a blast.
Lovely winter CA day
DOTS
Really good food and Atmosphere
It isn’t a manual, but at least the SLK is the V6. It’s a fun car when you want a convertible. 10/10 would one a V6 manual or 32 AMG.

Nothing beats a top-down mountain run on Christmas week!

39 is San Gabriel Canyon Rd to Glendora Mountain RD to Glendora Ridge Road to Mt. Baldy Village and then Mount Baldy Rd back down.

I agree. Was a much needed break from reality.

Thought s o, fun road, a bit tight at times though. Some crazy cyclists up there last time we were

It is tight, but low on cyclists this time of year. Did almost get pushed off the road buy some ricers (yes that’s the right term for the cars I saw). But yeah I like it up there.

Did you go all the way up to the ski area at Mt Baldy? The switchbacks on the road for the last couple of miles are wild, my Miata was struggling to make it up at any rate of decent speed over the summer when I went up there. Was surprising to actually need first gear as second was lugging around those turns. And if you went from 39 that means you had to take that sketchy road that looks like a one way path but is really a two way road with no markings and some turnouts when oncoming traffic comes along.
Any snow up there also? I am jealous, havent been able to do any top down motoring in a while. Hopefully finding another miata soon though!

No, we stopped in the Village for lunch and then went back down because we both had holiday plans.
There was snow on the top. And yes those switchbacks are quite the power zapper. Yeah there were a bunch of cyclists on the “2 way” road. Almost got run off the road by some ricers, but other than that is was fun.
Top down can be a lot of fun.

I think that is Glendora Ridge Road for that part? Last time I drove it, I just couldnt enjoy it because every blind turn I was worried a motorcyclist would pop out and then fly off the cliff when I drove by. So it took the fun out of it pretty much for me. 39 and GMR are amazing though. Both roads are fun to move with a purpose up and down and they dont really go anywhere so traffic is usually not bad either. You just missed the larger snowstorm though for sure since the 25th/26th there was a solid 5+ inches up there. Looked nicely covered on Baldy from when I drove by on the 210 on the 27th headed to Big Bear.

Yeah it is GRR. It was only cyclists up there and I wasn’t pushing it or anything. Just out for a nice drive. Not like the auto Mercedes is much fun to push like that anyway.
But yes 39 and all those roads up there are quite fun to drive and very pretty too.
